Two Republican senators, two divergent paths on Kavanaugh

The US Senate has pushed Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court past a key procedural hurdle.

"I think Judge Kavanaugh is a qualified individual and, while I am respectful of Professor Ford, I don't think the evidence is there to corroborate her claims", Kolbe said.

Senate Republicans, except for Lisa Murkowski, stood by Kavanaugh in a move that could resonate, particularly with women voters, in the November 6 elections to determine control of the Senate and House of Representatives.

That would put the final tally at 51-49 in Kavanaugh's favor.

Republican Senator Steve Daines said he plans to attend his daughter's wedding in Montana on Saturday, the same day the Senate may vote to confirm nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who's repeatedly battled Trump and will retire in January, said he'd vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation "unless something big changes".

Kavanaugh, who has denied the allegations, appeared to be on the fast-track towards being nominated prior to the accusation becoming public in September.

If he wins confirmation, Mr Kavanaugh - who has faced a bruising process that raised questions over his candor and partisan rhetoric, and his lifestyle as a young man - will seal a conservative majority on the nine-seat high court for years to come.

"I have reservations about this vote given the serious accusations against Judge Kavanaugh and the temperament he displayed in the hearings".

Republicans have said that a week-long investigation, summed up in the FBI dossier, had turned up nothing to corroborate the sexual assault allegations against the 53-year-old Kavanaugh, who now sits on a federal court in Washington. Both parties are hoping the bitter struggle will energize their most loyal voters to stream to the polls in less than five weeks, when GOP control of the House and perhaps the Senate is in play.

Trump helped parents dodge millions in taxes
In total, the president's father and mother transferred over $1 billion to their children, according to the Times tally. Trump Sr also helped Donald Trump out of multiple bad business deals, financial records and tax returns reveal.

Flake said he would vote against Kavanaugh if the investigation found the allegations were true or that the nominee lied during his confirmation hearing.

President Donald Trump said Friday he is "very proud" that the Senate has cleared the way to hold a vote on Kavanaugh. Manchin, the only Democrat supporting the nominee, faces a competitive re-election race next month in a state Trump carried in 2016 by 42 percentage points.

"W$3 ho wants to run for Senate in ME?" John Cornyn, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, who has been aggressively lobbying undecided senators to vote for Kavanaugh, also came over and touched Murkowski on the shoulder as they spoke.

On the other side, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia "s seat". I look forward to his confirmation to the Supreme Court".

Jenna Lowenstein, a Democratic digital strategist who worked for Hillary Clinton's campaign, also said she had enlisted 75 political staffers to help elect Collins's future challenger.

"Based on all the information I have available to me".

Collins said Kavanaugh assured her during a private meeting that Roe v. Wade, the ruling that established abortion rights, is settled law.

Republican Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, a member of the GOP leadership, said he would be "very surprised" if Murkowski switches her vote.

Kavanaugh would replace the retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, who was a swing vote on issues such as abortion, campaign finance and same-sex marriage.
