Kavanaugh fight sharpens the stakes for midterms

Until now, the fight for control of Congress has largely been viewed as a referendum on President Donald Trump's first two years in office.

Democrats may have failed in their bid to derail Brett Kavanaugh's candidacy for the Supreme Court in America, but they still hope this episode can deliver a political dividend.

But far from using the aftermath of the battle to try to heal the nation, Trump piled into even fiercer attacks.

Mr Trump said Democrats had "tortured" Mr Kavanaugh and his family. "I thought it was a disgrace".

Midterm elections usually go badly for a sitting USA president's party but here too, Trump is a wildcard and the first signs are polls showing Republican strength in the Senate forecasts. After just a short couple of months to catch our collective breath, it'll be time to start thinking about the 2020 presidential election.

"I think you're going to see a lot of things happen on November 6th that would not have happened before", he said.

Democrats fought tooth and nail to stop Kavanaugh's candidacy, claiming that the accomplished, conservative-minded judge was not suited to the Supreme Court, which will now tilt decisively to a more Republican-friendly panel. "That is because I forcefully and passionately denied the allegation against me".

Kavanaugh was officially sworn in Saturday evening as the 114th Justice of the Supreme Court by Chief Justice John Roberts who administered the Constitutional Oath in the Justices' Conference Room, hours after the 53-year-old judge was confirmed by a bitterly divided Senate by 50-48 votes - the closest nomination vote since 1881. Kavanaugh showed himself to be a severe partisan, and Collins, in effect, endorsed that partisanship when she voted to put him on the Supreme Court. But Trump went after her anyway, mocking her testimony and gaps in her memory as a rally crowd laughed and cheered. And I will always be a team player on the team of nine. "The democrats have become too extreme and too unsafe to govern", Trump said.

Labour set to back public vote on Brexit
But a People's Vote campaign spokesman said the conference motion was "clear movement" towards adopting a referendum. Firstly, Jeremy Corbyn's party will only support a so-called People's Vote if there is no Brexit deal.

President Trump referenced the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh by issuing an apology to him at the top of his remarks and blaming a campaign of "lies".

Which brings me to the second "no" - no more talk of impeaching Trump.

Republicans say the Democrats' tactics ahead of the confirmation are reigniting the GOP ahead of midterms.

Ms. Ness wrote Saturday after senators voted to confirm President Trump's nominee to the high court.

The other eight justices were all in attendance for Monday's swearing-in by retired justice Anthony Kennedy at an entirely ceremonial event.

The initial focus of opposition was exclusively on the conservative views held by the married father of two.

But constituents in ME have told a different story since Collins' speech last Friday, in which she suggested that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford incorrectly remembered Kavanaugh as the person who assaulted her when the two were in high school and claimed the judge had displayed an appropriate temperament for a Supreme Court justice.
