S Arabia welcomes joint action to investigate journalist disappearance

The Turkish foreign ministry said Tuesday that Saudi Arabian officials invited Turkish experts and related officials to visit its consulate in Istanbul.

Britain, a close Saudi ally, said the incident could affect relations with Riyadh if they are behind the incident.

Khashoggi went to the consulate to procure paperwork certifying that he had divorced his wife, in order to marry his fiancé, Hatice Cengiz, who is a Turkish national. She also asked the Saudi government to release closed-circuit TV footage from inside the consulate to shed light on what happened to her fiancé.

Turkish officials have said that Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate. Turkey's government stated that he never left the building and is likely deceased.

Earlier on Tuesday, foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt met the Saudi ambassador, Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf Al Saud, to voice the UK's concern about the disappearance Mr Khashoggi.

So far, the kingdom has offered no evidence in the past seven days to show that Mr Khashoggi ever left the building, as the new surveillance photo surfaced showed him walking in its main entrance. "It is not possible for us to remain silent regarding such an occurrence, because it is not a common occurrence", he said.

Khashoggi was a former government adviser who fled Saudi Arabia in September 2017 and lived in the United States fearing arrest back home. Bob Corker, who as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has reviewed USA intelligence on the case, said it was likely that Khashoggi was killed the day he walked into the consulate.

In a new report, the newspaper said USA intelligence intercepts showed that Salman had ordered an operation to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia from his home in the US and then to detain him. "As we speak today, there are Saudi intellectuals and journalists jailed".

Trump expressed reservations about withholding arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told reporters on Sunday evening that the authorities have started checking all security cameras and airport records, hours after a Turkish security source told Reuters that "Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate".

"Forced disappearances are cases against human rights and we are here to condemn this crime committed against a journalist", Yurtsever said. He said that senior state officials have been in communication with Riyadh.

Journalists and activists gathered outside the Saudi consulate on Monday demanding information on Khashoggi's fate.

Saudi Arabia insists Khashoggi exited the consulate after a brief visit. We see it in Syria, we see it in Egypt, we see it in other ones. "And we have investigators over there and we're working with Turkey, and frankly we're working with Saudi Arabia".

Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said the country was "open to co-operation" and a search of the building could go ahead as part of the investigation.
