In a statement after Friday's elections, Haley said the uncontested election "demonstrates again why the United States was right to withdraw" from the council, though she said the USA would continue to press for institutional reform of the council from the sidelines. "Human rights for us is a matter of natural choice, we are a democracy, we are a robust and vibrant society", he added. "This lack of standards continues to undermine the organization", she said.

The U.N. missions for Eritrea and the Philippines didn't immediately respond to inquiries about the vote and the criticism.

At the start of the voting session, the General Assembly's president, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, noted that every member state is allowed to apply for a seat.

"Yet again, countries with poor human rights records ran uncontested". It also periodically reviews human rights in every United Nations member country. This meant that all candidates, regardless of their rights records, were nearly assured seats on the council.

"The president's campaign against illegal drugs, corruption, and criminality has, in effect, been acknowledged by the global community as essential to the protection of the right to life, liberty and property", Duterte's spokesman, Salvador Panelo, said in a statement.

The HRW earlier said United Nations countries must show their outrage against the Philippines and Eritrea by keeping them off the council. The government denies the allegations.

The new members to join the UNHRC in 2019 are Argentina, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Czech Republic, Denmark, Eritrea, Fiji, India, Italy, Philippines, Somalia, Togo, and Uruguay.
