If, as the Turkish authorities say, these men were present at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul where Khashoggi disappeared on October 2, they might provide a direct link between what happened and Mohammed bin Salman.

US President Donald Trump gave Saudi Arabia the benefit of the doubt in the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi even as USA lawmakers pointed the finger at the Saudi leadership and Western pressure mounted on Riyadh to provide answers.

Republican Representative Jeb Hensarling, outgoing chairman of the House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, said Washington might have to seriously review relations with Saudi Arabia if Riyadh was involved in killing Khashoggi.

Before departing for Turkey, Pompeo said Saudi Arabia has committed to conducting a complete investigation into the disappearance of Khashoggi.

U.S. media outlets reported on Monday that Saudi Arabia will acknowledge Khashoggi was killed in a botched interrogation.

Saudi Arabia's King Salman and his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have denied involvement in Khashoggi's disappearance.

However, Turkish sources say the journalist was killed inside the consulate - claims Riyadh slammed as baseless.

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post newspaper, who apparently went missing after going to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

But in the last few days, as major USA businesses and media companies have withdrawn from a marquee investment conference in Riyadh, and members of Congress have stepped up called for sanctions, the United States, Turkey and Saudi Arabia appear to have been searching for a face-saving way out.

But constituents in ME have told a different story since Collins' speech last Friday, in which she suggested that Dr. But Trump went after her anyway, mocking her testimony and gaps in her memory as a rally crowd laughed and cheered.

President Donald Trump late Tuesday afternoon dug his heels in to defend the embattled kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Trump also commented that he doesn't "want to get" into King Salman's mind, but said, "it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

The telephonic talks between Trump and King Salman is being seen as an attempt by the Saudi ruler to defuse tension apparently caused by the 33-year-old Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Pompeo arrived at a royal palace in Riyadh on Tuesday.

In Turkey earlier Tuesday, a high-level Turkish official told the AP that police investigators searching the Saudi Consulate had found evidence that Khashoggi was killed there.

"I think we have to find out what happened first", Trump said.

Trump told reporters on Monday that the denial from King Salman that his government had any role to play in Khashoggi's disappearance was 'very strong'.

A prolific writer and commentator, Jamal Khashoggi was working for bringing democracy in the Arab region. Saudi Arabia is one of the closest United States partners in a bid to undermine Iran and also a massive client of the USA weapons industry. "The government of Saudi Arabia owes the Khashoggi family and the world a full and honest explanation of everything that happened to him, and we support the requests from Jama's family and the United Nations for an independent global investigation".

An expected search Tuesday of the consul general's residence did not take place, according to a deputy police officer near the building who spoke to CNN's team in Istanbul.
