Ahead of his disappearance, Washington Post columnist Khashoggi was highly-critical of Saudi Arabia's authoritarian kingdom's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. "It's very sad", Trump told journalists when asked if he believed Khashoggi, who disappeared more than two weeks ago, is no longer alive. "That's what happened", Lendman told Press TV in a phone interview on Thursday.

Robert Mahoney, deputy executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists, said: "U.N. involvement is the best guarantee against a Saudi whitewash or attempts by other governments to sweep the issue under the carpet to preserve lucrative business ties with Riyadh".

"Here is the head of the execution team", said Sabah's headline, and the paper then detailed Mutreb's movements on the day Khashoggi went missing.

Lendman said U.S. officials have given Riyadh a few more days to concoct the cover story.

Trump said he was waiting for details from "about three different investigations so we can get to the bottom of" Khoshoggi's disappearance.

The president said the consequences for Saudi Arabia, if they are ultimately deemed culpable, "will have to be very severe".

US President Donald Trump gave Saudi Arabia the benefit of the doubt on Tuesday even as US lawmakers pointed the finger at the Saudi leadership and Pompeo discussed the affair with Saudi King Salman and his Crown Prince in Riyadh. Turkish officials say they believe he was killed inside the building.

Cruz claimed that O'Rourke is the only Senate Democratic candidate this cycle who has explicitly supported Trump's impeachment. He also repeatedly cast O'Rourke as a key agitator if Democrats take Congress for the next two years under Trump.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said it is a pity that Mr Khashoggi has gone missing, but that Russia can not damage relations with Saudi Arabia without hard facts.

Numerous media reports citing Turkish officials state that Khashoggi was killed by Saudi agents in the consulate and that his body was dismembered.

While both of them were smiling in front of the cameras, the meeting was in a much more serious tone as Pompeo insisted the case was not something Saudi Arabia would casually dismiss and that the truth behind the disappearance would come out eventually, the report said.

As the U.S. toughened its response to Khashoggi's disappearance, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin pulled out of a major Saudi investment conference Thursday amid global pressure.

Turkish officials have said Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate.

The US president has been on the defensive ever since Khashoggi - a US resident and Washington Post contributor who had criticised Prince Mohammed - vanished on Oct 2 after visiting the Istanbul consulate.
