A date has been decided for the sentencing of political operative Paul Manafort.

The hearing in federal court in Alexandria was largely procedural, but provided the first glimpse of the former Trump campaign chairman since he began cooperating with prosecutors in special counsel Robert Mueller's office.

A federal jury convicted Manafort earlier this year on eight counts of tax and bank fraud.

Before to consider questions of charges, prosecutors waited until Manafort will cooperate with spectaculorum Robert Mueller, who is investigating the likely intervention of Russian Federation in the elections of 2016.

Manafort is now cooperating with prosecutors and that had been delaying his sentencing date.

Those conditions are for Manafort's safety, Downing said, but he asked that Ellis expedite the pre-sentence investigation so Manafort could move as soon as possible out of a local jail and presumably to a federal prison. But Judge T.S. Ellis expressed concerns about any further delay of the sentencing.

The judge also dismissed the outstanding 10 charges against Manafort without prejudice, meaning they could be filed again.

Lisa Murkowski explains why she is voting no on Kavanaugh
Kavanaugh's record as an appellate judge has received favorable reviews from almost all pro-life and religious freedom advocates. Advisers and Senate leaders had urged Trump not to attack Ford publicly, anxious such a move would anger on-the-fence senators.

Defense attorney Kevin Downing said in court that there are "significant issues with Mr. Manafort's health right now that have to do with his confinement".

Also Friday, special counsel prosecutors and Manafort's attorneys released several years of Manafort's tax returns.

Russian Federation has denied interfering in the election and Trump denies any collusion, frequently describing the Mueller investigation as a political witch hunt.

Manafort's trial and admissions of guilt focused on his lobbying work for pro-Russian Ukrainians and barely touched his time in the Trump campaign.

Prosecutors and Manafort's lawyers agreed that would be acceptable, and Ellis set the February 8 sentencing date.

Manafort in September pleaded guilty before a different judge in DC to two criminal counts of conspiracy and obstruction of justice, setting in motion his cooperation deal to assist the special counsel's probe into the 2016 presidential election.
