In New York, Jared Kushner, President Trump's son-in-law and a White House adviser, said in a television interview Monday that he has advised Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to be "fully transparent" about the Khashoggi case.

Saudi Arabia has said that the crown prince was not involved in the mission against Khashoggi.

The Turkish president demanded answers from Saudi Arabia on who gave the orders for the killing and the whereabouts of the journalist's remains.

"I urge the custodian of the two holy mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, to do what it takes because the crime has taken place in Istanbul and we need to know", Erdogan said.

"I want to tell all our foreign guests that the bad acts reported in recent weeks are alien to our culture; I'm sure that we will emerge stronger".

A week before his murder Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi noted at a conference he attended, "Change will happen exclusively because of the grave mistakes committed by the [Arab] despots".

Saudi officials said Friday, more than two weeks after Khashoggi's disappearance, that the journalist died in a fight at the consulate.

Mr Erdogan said Riyadh's suggestion it was a rogue operation "will not satisfy us" and said there should be no diplomatic immunity for his killers.

Maha Yahya, director of the Carnegie Middle East Centre in Beirut, speculated that Saudi Arabia could now be vulnerable to pressure, including from the USA, to end a boycott of Turkey-backed Qatar.

Several senior members of Trump's Republican Party said they believed Prince Mohammed - who has close relations with the president's son-in-law and advisor Jared Kushner - was linked to the killing.

Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has vowed to pursue sanctions against the Saudi regime if it is held responsible for the savage murder of Jamal Khashoggi by a 15-man hit squad.

Saudi Arabia said it arrested suspects and that several top intelligence officials were fired over Khashoggi's killing, but critics alleged that the punishment was created to absolve Prince Mohammed, the heir-apparent of the world's top oil exporter, of any responsibility.

Many questions remain unanswered, Erdogan added, namely who the team is that orchestrated the killing and where Khashoggi's body is located.

Meanwhile, Dmitriev, the head of Russia's Direct Investment Fund, said Khashoggi's killing needed to be investigated and the culprits punished, but that the Saudi drive for economic and social reform could not be ignored. But he made no mention of audio and video evidence Turkish officials say they have and which have been reportedly shared with Western intelligence agencies.

Turkish officials provided the United States and Western officials with verbal accounts of evidence they say they collected documenting Khashoggi's fate, the officials said.

Erdoğan expressed confidence that Saudi King Salman is cooperating with the investigation, saying he does not doubt the king's sincerity.
