Ethiopia gets first woman president Sahle Work Zewde- Reports

Following the sudden resignation of former President Mulatu Teshome on Wednesday, Ethopia's parliament has appointed a new president.

The parliament of Ethiopia has elected Sahle-Work Zewde as the nation's first female president.

Sahle-Work now serves as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' special representative to the African Union and head of the United Nations Office to the African Union. "Zewde, my brother Prime Minister Ahmed Abbiy and the great people of Ethiopia", he added.

Last week, parliament unanimously approved Abiy's nominations for his newly established 20-member Cabinet, half of whom are women, including the country's first female defense minister, Aisha Mohammed Musa.

The president, in her acceptance speech before the two houses, vowed to serve her country and its people with her utmost efforts.

Ethiopia on Thursday appointed a woman to the largely ceremonial position of president for the first time, further increasing female representation in the government of Africa's second most populous nation.

Countries around the globe urged the U.S.to stay in the three-decade-old arms control treaty with Russian Federation . Trump said the United States has "more money than anybody else, by far" to build up its arsenal.

According to the sources, Ambassador Sahlework Zewde, a prominent Ethiopian diplomat with years of experience with the United Nations, will be replacing the outgoing president, Dr. Mulatu Teshome, who has been the president since October 2013.

Sahle-Work's appointment comes amid a Cabinet reshuffle and radical political reforms by Abiy, who took office in April and, at 41, is Africa's youngest leader.

Just prior to her appointment as president she was the UN's top official at the African Union.

Zewde, a career diplomat and global civil servant, joins the expanding league of distinguished African women to occupy the apex office on the continent with former presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Joyce Banda of Malawi.

Nevertheless, Sahle-Work's position carries important symbolic weight and social influence.

Ms Sahle-Work, 68, made history as the east African country's first woman in the ceremonial but symbolic role.
