Novak Djokovic reveals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's best shot

With Djokovic only needing to better Nadal's performance in Paris to take top spot, the Wimbledon and US Open champion will become world number one for the first time in nearly two years next week.

Djokovic had learnt on Wednesday he would be back as world number one next week following Rafa Nadal's withdrawal from the tournament through injury.

"I'm obviously very proud of the achievement, but I haven't been really reflecting on that and focusing on that too much because it's the middle of the week", Djokovic told a news conference.

Five months ago, it was highly improbable considering my ranking and the way I played and felt on the court.

"I'll probably be able to speak more profoundly about it when the season is done and hopefully if I get to finish as No. 1".

Djokovic ranked as lowly as 22nd earlier this year, before bouncing back strongly since the Wimbledon, winning 29 of his last 30 matches through to Thursday.

This latest injury will cost him his No. 1 ranking, which goes back to longtime rival Novak Djokovic next week. "I'm looking forward to it".

Cilic, the fifth seed, secured his quarter-final ticket with a 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 defeat of Grigor Dimitrov. I checked with the doctor and he said that he recommended to not play, because if I continued the abdominal may break and could become a major thing.

Famous five for Hamilton as he wins the world title again
Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen won the race, ahead of Ferrari pair Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen . Although he ended the day with the drivers' title, it was not a race Hamilton will look back on fondly .

The 10th-seeded Nishikori did not face break points in beating the seventh-seeded Anderson - the Wimbledon runner-up to Djokovic - 6-4, 6-4.

The win also improved the Croat's prospects of making the ATP Finals in London starting on November 11.

Serbian star Djokovic is due to face Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals in the French capital. "(It will be) great to play him again".

He'll be replaced by lucky loser Malek Jaziri.

In addition to Nadal, Milos Raonic and Marton Fucsovics withdrew from the last Masters 1000 event of the year on Wednesday, handing respective walkover victories to Roger Federer and Fabio Fognini.

There was a more stressful passage for Isner, but the American did just enough to edge out Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-1) and keep his hopes of an ATP Finals place alive.

Elsewhere, German fourth seed Alexander Zverev, playing his 70th match of the season, defeated Frances Tiafoe of the United States 6-4, 6-4 while defending champion Jack Sock put out Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-3.
