Large fire threatens Ventura County communities 101 Freeway closed hundreds evacuated

Drought-stricken fuels, Santa Ana wind conditions, low relative humidity, high temperatures: "It's a recipe for fire", said Ventura County Fire Department Assistant Chief Chad Cook, the incident commander for the Hill Fire.

The Los Angeles and Ventura county fire departments say multiple buildings have been destroyed or damaged, but exact numbers were not available early Friday. Fire officials said strong winds had hampered efforts to drop retardant by aircraft.

As a result of the fire jumping the freeway, the City of Malibu was placed under mandatory evacuation orders, an emergency alert stated.

Crews are doing everything possible to get control of the fire, Dettorre said. While there have been injuries from the fire, there's no official tally of how many civilians and firefighters were hurt or possibly killed.

It was 0 percent contained and the cause was under investigation. The fire was burning on the south side of the freeway in areas that were evacuated hours earlier.

The LA County Sheriff's Office said it was receiving "many emergent phone calls" from people who "need our help to evacuate" and urged motorists in the area to be aware of emergency vehicles.

"We appreciate everybody's efforts and kind prayers for all the people from our victims that lost their lives in the shooting to now what's happening with people losing their homes", Foy said. "All residents, from Ventura County Line to the area of the Getty Villa and the Ventura (101) Freeway to the ocean, must evacuate as soon as possible".

He said: "The town is devastated, everything is destroyed".

The message comes as three major fires now cause catastrophic damage, two in Southern California and one in the Northern California.

To the west in Ventura County, Moorpark College is closed due to the impacts of fire and Wednesday night's deadly mass shooting in nearby Thousand Oaks.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the fire has grown to 8,000 acres as is burning through Oak Park into Agoura Hills.

Wildfires raging west of Los Angeles have forced school closures.

Cal Fire had not reported any firefighter fatalities related to containment efforts on the Camp Fire, nor the two burning in Ventura County, as of 10 a.m. Friday.

Mary said her family hopes that they'll return to find their home intact. She and her husband eventually were able to drive away safely.

The actor said his "nervous" daughter Willow, 18, asked him to go and have a look outside as the Woolsey wildfire, which is now 14,000 acres and being fed by strong winds and dry conditions, creeps closer to their home.

The fire also injured three firefighters but the total casualty picture was not yet clear.
